Kingsman: The Golden Circle is the sequel to the previous movie Kingsman: The Secret Service which was out in 2014. It was produced and directed by Matthew Vaughn, distributed by 20th Century Fox. The story follows the surviving members of Kingsman, Eggsy and Merlin to team up with another spy organization in America, the Statesman to save the world again from another threat.

In my opinion, this movie is quite disappointing compared to the previous movie, considering this sequel is one of the most awaited movie of the year. The plot itself is shallow and predictable, though I did enjoy the comedy and action. If we could see Eggsy’s personality is growing in the first movie, then in this sequel there’s almost no character development. For that kind of plot, I do think that the duration of the movie is overly long. Not to mention that I wasn’t very fond of the idea of the character who’s been presumed death came back to life just like that. It was too easy and he sure had a very good luck there. On the other hand, I didn’t see the point why Merlin had to die while Harry is alive. But maybe, we can see Merlin’s alive on the third movie? Who knows.

If in the first movie I was in awe by Taron Egerton’s action, I felt like in this movie his skill is rather lacking. In the end of the first movie he could successfully finish his mission without too much trouble, but in the sequel, he couldn’t even take down agent Tequila alone. In addition, at the final fight against agent Whiskey, both Galahads seemed quite troubled even when the fight was 2 against 1. And then, in my opinion, killing people by throwing them into a beef mincer isn’t necessary. Honestly I think it wasn’t funny and very disgusting.

When I watched the trailer, I thought Channing Tatum will play a significant role in this sequel. I expected him to be Eggsy’s partner from the Statesman on the mission. It turned out that he didn’t. The bigger role was given to the Pedro Pascal instead. So maybe it was counted as a plot twist? However I’m not gonna complain on that because actually I was waiting for Pascal’s role on the movie. I was interested in him since his acting on Game of Thrones. And I wasn’t disappointed, he’s a good actor and he’s best for portraying laid back playboy like agent Whiskey.

I might sound like I complained a lot regarding this sequel, but the truth is I still enjoying it. The comedy, especially on the scenes with sir Elton John, oh my God, it was hilarious! I can’t forget how Elton John performed side kick with those high heels on. When I first see Elton John’s name on the list, I didn’t expect him to act like that, so I could say it was a surprise and it’s a good thing. I also love Taron Egerton’s British accent very much! I wish I could speak English like that.

Overall, it was an enjoyable movie, though it’s lacking on the plot and character development. Happy watching!

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

“I have a twin brother!” – Gru

I’ve been following this animation movie franchise since the beginning, including its spinoff, so despite the bad review and ratings, it’s still become one of my must watch list this month.

Honestly this movie was below my expectation. The idea and storyline were so-so. I mean, Gru suddenly has twin brother? That’s really came from nowhere. In my opinion, compared to the previous movies, the quality of the story is going down as the sequel increases. Given the quite open ending, I think there will be a 4th movie in a few years.

As the movie is supposed to be family comedy, in my opinion it’s not as funny as the previous movies which could make the whole theater laughing out loud. This movie is funny but it’s not that funny that you want to roll on the floor and laughing so hard. The funniest part of the movie and might be the best part is still nailed by the minions army. So for entertainment only, this movie is still served its purpose. If you are looking for some animation comedy but with deeper and impactful storyline, this one is not recommended.

Review:

I really like the main idea of this drama, a story about two women with the same name and one of them is mistaken as the other. It is such a simple idea, yet with the additional of this and that, the writer succeed to create such a wonderful story. This drama is one of the best romantic comedy drama I ever watch, besides The Sassy Girl Chun Hyang I think. When usually the other drama will only focus on the sad scene and forget the comedy part, I love how they make the comedy in this drama consistent. Even in the depressing scenes, the drama still can make you laugh. Even so, it doesn’t make the roller coaster of feeling of this drama becomes less.

A good drama is not only depends on a good writer. It should be supported by a great actors and actress to make this drama successful. In my opinion, this drama has one of the best casts. Everyone was so into the character to the point that I can’t imagine those character can be played by another actor/actress.

My favorite is of course Seo Hyun-jin. Her acting was great as the plain Oh Hae-young. Funny, straightforward, crazy and yet attractive. I always say to myself when I watch her doing something hilarious on the screen, “Oh this crazy girl, how can she be so funny!”. The plain Oh Hae-young’s character was very expressive, and I think she’s very good at making expression, whether it is funny, angry, sad, happy, etc.

Another actor who catch my eye is Lee Han-wi who acted as the plain Oh Hae-young’s father. He didn’t have many dialogues on the drama, but that’s exactly what made him interesting. He always give me this funny feeling when he appeared on screen. If it wasn’t him, I bet it would give the drama a totally different feel. Overall, all of the casts were funny and I enjoy their acting very much.

I think what’s most interesting about this drama is, they tried to show us that there are many forms of love and relationship in this world. Do-kyung’s love for the pretty Oh Hae-young might be a pity. Han Tae-jin’s love for the plain Oh Hae-young is letting her go and hurt her instead of let her made the choice. Do-kyung and plain Hae-young’s love was a kind of love that will do anything for the one you love. Park Hoon and Anna’s love life was a an exciting and passionate love. While Jin-sang and Soo-kyung’s love was a siblings like love but on their way to couple’s love. I can’t say that Do-kyung’s and Hae-young’s love is the best, but I agree that when it comes to different people, we love them in different form and nothing is right or wrong when it comes to love.

Because we can relate in our everyday life, the explanation about love becomes very realistic. What if Do-kyung never met the plain Oh Hae-young and marry the pretty Oh Hae-young instead, will he become happy? I think so. We already watch several times how devastated Do-kyung when pretty Hae-young leaves, so is the plain Hae-young. They did really love their partner wholeheartedly, but it’s just fate that plays with them and give them another way instead.

One thing that feels off for this drama is on the episode 15 until the end, they already become a too lovey-dovey couple with nothing to afraid about, which is very rare in Korean drama world. So a few last episodes were feel like filler only episodes instead of conclusions. I didn’t hate the finals, but it is just anti-climax so it becomes a little bit boring for me.

So the conclusion is, if you don’t want to watch a heartbreaking story which will make you depressed but still want a good lesson from it, go watch this drama. It’s really worth your time 🙂

Mood of the Day (2016)

24 hours with a stranger which change your life.

Title: 그날의 분위기 / Mood of the Day

Genre: Romance, Comedy

Main Cast(s):

  • Moon Chae-won as Bae Soo-jung
  • Yoo Yeon-seok as Kim Jae-hyun

Plot:

This movie tells a story about a man and woman who met at a train and somehow spent 24 hours together at Busan. At first the woman dislikes the man because he was such a womanizer, but after series of events she gradually finds him as a good man. As for the man, she might not be just an ordinary one night stand partner.

Review:

The main idea of this movie is not something new, you can find any other movies which has the same theme and might be better. Because in my opinion, the plot wasn’t built that nice. There were some questions unanswered until the end. Why Jae-hyun became a womanizer in the first place? Why did he stop playing basketball? Did something happen to him in the past? I was originally thought I would be getting an answer in the end because I clearly heard Senior Kang told Jae-hyun that Kang Jin-chul doesn’t share the same ambition with him to go for NBA. So there must be something behind that made him ambitious for the NBA right? But it seems like they were not planning to give us conclusion.

Despite those plot holes, I can say what makes this movie worth to watch is the acting of the main leads. Honestly I was interested to watch this movie is because I like Moon Chae-won a lot, especially in her drama with Song Joong-ki, The Nice Guy. I do think that she is a great actress and I’m very satisfied with her acting in this movie. She was well matched with Yoo Yeon-seok, they had a good chemistry as a couple in this movie, not to mention that Yoo yeon-seok is a great actor himself.

Since its genre is romantic comedy, you can find many funny and entertaining moments here that would make you laugh all the way. Whenever Jo Jae-yoon appeared on screen I always laugh just seeing his face. I think he was one of the main comedy here because in those 103 minutes of the movie, I don’t think that his role is significant and is often forgotten by Jae-hyun, poor him 😦 But I gotta admit that the plot gets more serious and almost no comedy at all towards the end.

Another thing that I love about this movie is they put Ed Sheeran’s Photograph as one of the main background song. No words can explain how the song was perfect for the movie. I don’t think that it was Ed Sheeran’s version, but I can’t find who made the arrangement of the song for the movie either so just enjoy the song while watching the movie.

If you seek for a light romantic comedy movie for entertainment purpose only, then this movie is worth your time. Otherwise you might find this movie just so-so.

Review:

I originally wanted to watch this drama after it finished airing in Korea, so I don’t have to go through the torture of waiting for the next episode. But since my friends often talk about how good this drama is, my curiosity wins. And really, I had no regrets. This drama is one of the best drama ever. I really liked how the drama has unique background story (military combined with medical) that no other drama has. This drama is not just depending of its famous actor/actress, but it really has interesting story which packed with a balanced amount of humor and thriller. Few scenes can make you laugh out loud while the others can make you hold your breath and even crying (especially near the final episode). Not only the lead actor/actress(s) have great acting, but the other supporting roles also have awesome acting skill. It was as if they were chosen to play that role. I would also say this drama has the best original soundtrack ever! There’s no other drama soundtrack which can make me listen to it for weeks without getting bored. Even now, I’m still not over the soundtrack.

To be honest, when there’s a rumor that this drama will have a sad ending made me scared. I don’t want a sad ending for my favorite drama, and I think everyone who loves this drama will think the same too. But after watching the final episode, I feel like it might be better to leave the drama end on the 14th episode where Si-jin and Dae-young are assumed to be dead. With that, the viewers may be on rage, but the drama will leave a huge impact on the viewer. Because in my opinion, the happy ending offered by the story writer is not really satisfying and somewhat forced. But I’m still relieved it does end in happy ending, surely I couldn’t bear the tears if it ends in sad ending. Overall, this is a super recommended drama and really really worth to watch. Don’t forget to listen to the original soundtrack as well, you definitely will like it.
